Max’s Story | Print |  E-mail
It was a cold, dreary Friday morning in March when Max knocked softly on my office door-jamb. I had an open-door policy and I could tell Max wanted to talk about something important when he said, closing the door…”Hoss, (his name for me rather than boss) if you can spare some time, we gotta talk”. Max was always one of our top-performers and his thoughts and ideas were usually good…but I could tell that this probably wasn’t about business.

Max, who always got straight to the point said, “ I just ran into a real interesting challenge and I need to ask for a month or two to get away and get a handle on it.” Coming from a guy who I had come to know was eagerly “on the Job”, it caught me by surprise, so I asked him what the problem was. Max informed me in a surprisingly controlled but emotional manner that his doctor (and a second opinion) told him he had a rather virulent form of cancer that in his words “don’t give me too much wriggle room”.

Max wanted to take a leave of absence to explore what he could do about his challenge. We agreed to get the leave in motion right away and Max was gone by Monday…. Where, he didn’t say. But knowing Max, I had a feeling that if anybody could handle this challenge, Max could.

Six weeks later Max pulled into the office parking lot on a Harley Fat Boy with his head wrapped fashionably in a burnt orange tie cap. He came into my office with a big smile on his face and announced… “I’m not all the way back, but I’m gainin’ on ‘er!

Max related how he had gone to the Utah mountains to learn some “mindbody trainin”. He had completely changed his diet, exercise and sleep habits and looked healthier and happier than I had ever seen him. He told me if things keep going in the right direction he would be back in about a month if he still had a job…and he would tell me then what he had done on his leave.

Max came back on June 1st and said… “I feel like a million bucks!” He went on to say his whole outlook on life had changed for the better after “my time in the mountains.” A friend of his had told him about a mountain retreat where he could “go get a grip on things…to talk with a “mountain guru” who was teaching people how to harness the healing power of the subconscious mind. Max said he had come to truly believe that his subconscious mind could heal him. He had developed a deep down faith that he would get better every day. There was no doubt in his mind he would be healthy and happy.

Well, it had certainly worked for Max. His oncologist could find no signs of his cancer…it was completely gone! Max came back to work and was a dynamo until he retired at 65. The cancer never came back. How this remarkable healing took place was a mystery to me, but I understood Max knew…way down deep in his subconscious mind.

This is a true story. There are many more like this in our world. It is entirely possible that you can harness the enormous power of your subconscious mind.
