The good thing about washing your hands is that, done properly, it will effectively kill nasty new drug resistant germs like MRSA. Done Properly… means that you must, at a minimum, wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 30-35 seconds. Put another way, about the same time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice. To be an effective germ-killer, you must wash thoroughly between your fingers, rinse all the soap off your hands with clean water and dry them with an unshared clean towel or forced hot air. Is this something you and your kids do on a routine basis? Probably not.

And this is the bad news. A recent survey showed the average time most people wash their hands when using a public restroom facility was 7 seconds! And not one person in the 35 people surveyed washed their hands for the doctor-recommended 30 seconds minimum. And kids, who are more susceptible to germs in school environs, washed their hands even less; 5 seconds on average…when they did it at all. Added to that fact, many restrooms in public facilities do not have adequate supplies of soap and towels.

So what are we to conclude? Hand washing is not an effective tool for a great majority of our population in preventing the spread of MRSA and other nasty germs.
